LA TRINIDAD VALLEY

*The Valley of La Trinidad during pre-Spanish times was originally called “Benguet” meaning a marshy land (and the placid shell coming from it)
*Colonial influence reached the area upon Spanish explorers Don M. Quirantes discovery of the valley in 1642, and Guillermo Galveys expedition to benguet in 1829
*The District of Benguet was established in La trinidad by 1846, it was only in April 21, 1874 under Commandant Manuel Scheidnagel,- That “Valle de Benguet” was renamed “Valle de La Trinidad” (La Trinidad Valley)
*With the establishment of Benguet as a province under the Republic of the Philippines in 1899
*In 1900, The American colonizers arrived, and La Trinidad was established as one of the 19 townships under benguet province and moved the capital from La trinidad to Baguio in 1901
*In 1942, Japanese soldiers occupied La Trinidad, Benguet
*La Trinidad was transformed into a full -fledged town from its former statue as municipal district in June 16, 1950
*The municipality is known for its strawberry and vegetable plantations earning the title “Strawberry Firlds of the Philippines”

*Binondo was founded in 1594
*Was created by Spanish Governor Luis Pérez Dasmariñas as a permanent settlement for Chinese immigrants who converted to Catholicism
*The Spanish gave a land grant for Binondo to a group of Chinese merchants and artisans in perpetuity, Tax-free and limited self governing privileges
*During the brief British Occupation of Manila (between 1762 and 1764), Binondo was bombarded on several occasions and some of its structures destroyed- Many Spanish, Mestizos, Chinese and Filipino were killed and brought into prisons indiscriminately
*Binondo became the main center for business and finance in Manila for the ethnic Chinese, Chinese mestizos and Spanish Filipinos
*Before WWII, Binondo was the centre of a banking and financial community which included Insurance Companies, Commercial Banks and other Financial Institutions from Britain and the United States of America- These banks were located mostly along Escolta (which used to be called the .. “Wall Street of the Philippines”
*After the war and new development, most businesses began to relocate to the newer are of Makati

“ MASS AT SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH “

*The church Built between 1587 and 1606, and remains under the care of the Augustinians who founded it
*San Agustin Church is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines
*San Agustin church it is the first European Stone church to be built in the Philippines designed in Spanish Architecture Structure
*San Agustin Church the only building left intact after the destruction of intramuros during the Battle of Manila in 1945
*During WWII, The Imperial Japanese Troops ordered Intramuros residents to leave their houses and held them hostage inside San Agustin Church
*Some of the hostages were later killed at The Palacio Del Gobernador in Intramuros while some were liberated by filipino and American forces on February 25, 1945

*Rizal was detained in Fort Santiago before he was executed 
*The grabe of Dr. Jose Rizal in the Paco Cemetery surrounded by some of the people’s who helped him in his life: Don Benigno Santos, Rosenda Martinez, Cecilio Velarde, Ciriaco Trinidad (his sister), Doña Teodora Alonso (his mother), Remigio Garcia, Clemente de Jesus, Juan Eulogio, Romualdo de Jesus, Lorenzo Jurado, Anastacio Javier, Fructuoso Santos, Pascual Herrera and Marcelo Nepomuceno 
* Rizal was executed by a firing squad on December 30, 1896 in Bagumbayan, but he was only given a proper burial on Dec. 30, 1912 after the Spaniards were defeated and Americans took over the country 
*At first, his body was secretly buried at the Old Paco Cemetery 
*Rizal’s remains were exhumed, brought to his sister Narcisa’s house (Binondo, Manila) and placed in an ivory urn that stayed there until 1912
*In 1912, the government finally moved to put the urn at the base of the Rizal monument, Luneta (Rizal Park) manila, which would be mounted a year after

SAN NICOLAS FIRE STATION

*Fire fighting in the country during the Spanish times was unorganized
*The task was usually assigned to street sweepers who would rush to the scene of a fire in case of an alert
*However, it was only during the American period in August 1901-( that fire fighting became institutionalized and consequently gave birth to Manila Fire Department established by the Philippines Commission
*San Nicolas Fire Station is among the first fire station built in the Philippines
*The following years, Capt. Hugh Bonner was designed fire chief (formerly chief of the New York Fire Department)
*He was credited to have introduced rules and regulations for firemen and a telephone system to receive alarm
*Moreover, It was also under his administration that the San Nicholas Fire Station was constructed
*San Nicolas Fire Station was hailed as one of the first to have been established in Manila and was then “considered modern in every aspect”
*In order to preserve as much of its original structure design - the structure was restored and repainted in 2013 upon endorsement of the NHCP (National Historical Commission of the Philippines)
*In fact, the original fireman poles, windows, room and wooden interior remain intact and true to its original form
